Unity

Artwork illustration for "Unity", verse number 39 from the Dao DeGen collection
The things that since the beginning of time were made whole:
heaven was made whole and so became clear,
earth was made whole and so became stable,
spirits were made whole and so became divine,
the valley was made whole and so became fertile,
all things were made whole and so became alive,
leaders were made whole and so became honored.
In each case, it was wholeness that made these things what they are.

Therefore:
without clarity, heaven would split apart;
without stability, earth would sink;
without the divine, spirits would vanish;
without fertility, the valley would become desert;
without life, all things would cease to exist;
without honor, leaders would be overthrown.

The nobleman is rooted in the common man;
the high is founded on the low.
That is why rulers call themselves
orphans, widowers, and outcasts.
This shows their dependency.

So it is true that "the highest praise is no praise."
Do not tinkle like jade
or clatter like stone chimes.

Do not shine like a precious gem on a standalone chain. Be as dull and reliable as a common token—the one that plugs into everything.
