Using Skills

Artwork illustration for "Using Skills", verse number 27 from the Dao DeGen collection
A good walker leaves no tracks;
a good speaker makes no slips;
a good reckoner uses no tallies.
A well-shut door has no lock, yet it cannot be opened.
A well-tied knot has no rope, yet it cannot be undone.

Thus the sage takes care of all men
and abandons no one.
She takes care of all things
and abandons nothing.
This is called "following the light."

Therefore the good man teaches the bad man,
and the bad man is the good man's charge.
If the teacher is not honored,
and the student not cared for,
confusion will arise, however clever one is.
This is the crux of mystery.
